The paradigm shift in energy storage.
FastCAP Fact: FastCAP's ultracaps are a cost effective energy storage solution for "stop and go" fleet vehicles, such as city buses, taxi cabs, delivery vehicles and school buses. Ultracapacitors in this application can work with a hybrid electric motor to deliver significant fuel savings, or can operate as a stand alone storage system in a purely electric vehicle. The frequent "stop and go" action allows the ultracaps, which can fully charge in only a few seconds, to charge via regenerative breaking.
About FastCAP

It took six years of collaborative research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop our cutting edge energy storage technology…

Compared to traditional batteries currently used in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), our ultracapacitor costs less and offers twenty times higher power densities, similar energy densities, and millions of full charge-discharge cycles. By using only domestically-abundant and eco-friendly raw materials, FastCAP SYSTEMS will be the first to bring this breakthrough technology to automotive markets.

Our Mission

Our mission is to transform the automotive and power grid industries in the United States to create jobs, curb harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce carbon-based fuel consumption…

FastCAP ultracapacitors will dramatically reduce the cost of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). And with wide-spread penetration in US markets alone, FastCAP-enhanced HEVs could reduce annual fuel consumption by 80 million barrels of oil, save consumers $4 billion of spending on fuel, and eliminate 24M tons of CO2 emissions. The FastCAP products could also enable lower pricing for renewable energy generation, reducing annual CO2 emission by 140 million tons and saving $11 billion in annual fuel consumption. Our ultimate goal is to create thousands of new jobs in both the automotive and electric grid sectors while empowering our country to achieve energy independence.

Team Member Perspective: Riccardo - CEO
Riccardo, CEO"Energy is the single biggest challenge we face - both as a nation and globally. There is nothing that drives us more than using technology to uncover solutions to meet that challenge. Every single team member at FastCAP has a demonstrated commitment to the same mission - a passion for making a difference in our inevitable switch to clean energy - and that passion propels the company in a clear way."

Our Environment

FastCAP Systems' state of the art R&D and pilot production facility is located in a renovated industrial loft in the heart of Boston's Innovation District…

The burgeoning clean technology cluster that has taken root in FastCAP's neighborhood, coined by Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino as the city's "Innovation District", has created a fertile collaborative environment for the FastCAP Team. That, coupled with the scenic beauty of the area, and the increasing number of shops, restaurants and supporting business located nearby make it the ideal location for FastCAP's growth and expansion.

Team Member Perspective: Chris - FastCAP Product Engineer
Chris"The laboratory environment at FastCAP is exceptional. The facility itself is spacious, open and full of light - with spectacular views of the waterfront. FastCAP's innovation district location is a huge bonus for me. I live and work in the district, and am able to walk or ride my bike to work. Working for a progressive company in a beautiful place is about as good as it gets."

Our Commitment

Innovative and break-through technology development is what we do at FastCAP…

and through that process we, as well as other clean technology companies in the US, are busy creating cleantech jobs for upcoming generations. But creating high quality jobs in clean technology is only half the battle. In the US, our children are far less likely to choose careers in math, science and engineering when compared with their international counterparts. FastCAP is involved in local organizations, and our staff serve as mentors to local students to help children realize the great potential in choosing a career in the sciences and engineering. We need to grow not only our technology, but also a strong and innovative workforce that will push those technologies ahead for years to come.

Team Member Perspective: Jamie - Counsel & Director of Operations
Jamie"We face many challenges as a nation - in not only developing transformational technology that will produce valuable clean energy jobs - but also in educating our children to be innovative engineers, mathematicians and scientists. As we transition as a nation to a cleantech economy, developing our most valuable asset - our future workforce - is of utmost importance, and FastCAP is committed to help make this happen."

Our Impact

Our products carry the potential for transformational impact in a wide variety of markets that will directly affect individual consumers…

The "behind the scenes" uses for the technology - like grid frequency regulation - will certainly have substantial indirect impacts on consumers through enjoyment of a more efficient and smarter grid - which will lead to lower energy costs. Ultracaps also have the ability to enable new territories in clean energy exploration, such as geothermal exploration. Examples like this carry with them great benefits to the country, such as development of green technology jobs, lowered greenhouse gas emissions, a bolstered clean energy economy, energy Independence and energy security. But the real and direct impact that consumers will feel when FastCAP technology is fully deployed is in transportation.

Team Member Perspective: John - Co-founder & Director of Applications Engineering
"FastCAP is developing a technology that will enable consumers to purchase clean and fuel sipping hybrid electric vehicles with little or no cost increase when compared to conventional vehicles on the market today. This will keep money in the pockets of consumers, both in fuel savings over the life of the vehicle, and in initial cost - and there is no better economic stimulus than that."
